Our History...
In 1876 there were enough Lutherans in Cheboygan for a pastor to come and serve them. Reverend Christian Schwan had come to this country from Germany to serve German immigrants. His efforts resulted in the establishing of St. John congregation at Riggsville and St. Thomas at Cheboygan as well as other preaching places and congregations in the Upper Peninsula. St. Thomas congregation was officially organized in 1881.
In the beginning, a few German families would meet for services in a fish shanty. Due to steady growth, a frame church was built, 12x40x 12 feet high in 1883 and a larger stone church was erected in 1904, complete with a bell tower. The current church building was dedicated in 1953. A parish hall with 20 classrooms was dedicated in 1965. In 1993 a Fellowship Room with an elevator was added to the church. In 2002 an addition of three offices took place.
In 1950 the Zion Lutheran Church of Harrison Avenue of the Duncan Bay area merged with St. Thomas as did St. John Lutheran of Riggsville in the mid 1970's.
